IPL FAQ

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. IPL is used to treat skin spots and improve skin appearance. We want our clients to have a safe, gentle, and effective skin renewal treatment option. We exclusively offer Lumecca treatments. During your appointment you will quickly discover our Lumecca treatment as a superior solution to improve skin complexion, reduce skin irregularities, and help you look years younger.

LUMECCA is the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. After just one use, patients notice significant improvement in the complexion and clarity of their skin. Lumecca operates using photothermolysis, which provides a photo facial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment.

In just 1-3 sessions, Lumecca improves the appearance of:

  • Age spots (red/brown pigmentation)
  • Vascular lesions such as “spider veins”
  • Rosacea (redness)
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage

Lumecca can be used on all areas of the body. The most common areas of treatment are the areas that are regularly exposed to the sun. This often includes the face, neck, chest, legs, hands, and arms.

Avoid direct, excessive sun exposure or tanning for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. This will help ensure a more effective treatment.

Your provider will meet with you to discuss any concerns and evaluate any elisions to ensure they can be treated and not require a referral to dematology for treatment. Occasionally we will discover concerning lesions that should be further evaluated to rule out skin cancer. We will always err on the side of caution to ensure you receive the care you need. It is better to evaluate a lesion and learn it is benign than to ignore something and later find out it was malignant.

When you arrive your provider will discuss the treatment with you and identify any concerns you may have. If you are wearing make up or lotion, we will have you wash your face and then pace you in a comfortable and reclined position. We will place a headband to keep hair off of your face, then cover your eyes to protect them from light pulses. It is recommended you keep your eyes closed since you will not be able to see anything.

We will apply a clear gel to your skin and then start the treatment after conducting a test patch to verify we have the optimal settings for your skin type and needs. During treatment there will be a bright flashing light an a sensation on your skin that may feel like a light snap from an elastic band.

Redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment and usually subside within an hour.

Over the next 24-48 hours you may see a darkening of pigmented spots. Over the next week, the pigmented lesions will flake off and you should notice a more even skin tone. If you have had a vascular lesion treated, you may see the vein blanch and disappear or a color change. This color change will disappear after a few days.

You do not have to wait to apply makeup and we recommend you always include sunblock (SPF 45 or higher) in you skin care routine. Sunblock will help protect the investment you have put into your skin and minimize any future sun damage or effects of aging. Your provider can help identify products that would best meet your individual needs.

An improved skin appearance may be noted after the first session. Multiple sessions provide even better results. Your individual treatment plan will depend upon the severity of skin damage, skin type, type of treatment needed (vascular lesions vs sun damage) and response to treatment. Typically clients will have a follow up appointment 2-3 weeks after each treatment to evaluate treatment results and receive their next treatment. Once you have achieved your desired results and your treatments are over it is recommended that you avoid direct sun exposure and have annual treatments to maintain your results.

Sun damage and skin complexion results can be seen a few days after the first session. the skin will continue to look younger and more brilliant over time, with most visible results after 1-2 weeks. Having multiple photo facial sessions will improve the final result. For vascular treatments, visible results can be see in approximately 2 weeks.

Most patients do not experience any side effects and any skin reaction usually resolves within a few hours. Patients may find they are sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning.
